On February 28, the United States and Israel launched military strikes against Iran using missiles and aerial bombings, reportedly killing Supreme Leader Khamenei and numerous high-ranking government and military officials. Reports also indicate that a primary school in southern Iran was hit, resulting in the deaths of approximately 100 children.
U.S. President Trump cited “preventing Iran’s nuclear development” as the justification for the attacks. However, this was a lightning-fast, unilateral military invasion carried out in the very midst of negotiations regarding that nuclear program. The injustice is glaring: while Israel’s own nuclear arsenal goes unchallenged, the two nations have conspired to violate Iran’s sovereignty through brute force. Carried out without a UN Security Council resolution, this is a clear violation of the UN Charter. The United States and Israel must cease their attacks on Iran immediately.
As Iran retaliates, the flames of war are spreading across the Gulf states. The Strait of Hormuz—through which a quarter of the world’s maritime oil and the vast majority of Japan’s crude oil imports pass—has been effectively blockaded. The military, political, and economic fallout of this illegal aggression on the global stage is immeasurable.
In the face of this outrage, the Japanese government’s response has been utterly spineless. Prime Minister Takaichi, who once declared regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that “attempts to change the status quo by force must not be tolerated,” now merely falters, stating she will “refrain from making a legal assessment” of the U.S.-led attacks. With a Japan‑U.S. summit scheduled for the 19th of this month, she must stop hiding behind a cowardly double standard. She should explicitly inform President Trump that an attack on Iran in violation of international law and the UN Charter is absolutely unacceptable.
Japan is a peace-loving nation that has maintained friendly relations with both Iran and the United States. We must not stand by idly as the Middle East and the world fall into chaos; we must join our voices with other conscientious nations to stop this folly.
The Japan Congress of Journalists (JCJ) does not recognize any armed attack against a sovereign state. From our standpoint that threatening peace and taking irreplaceable civilian lives is intolerable, we express our strongest protest and demand an immediate end to the attacks.
