〈JCJ声明〉グレタ・トゥーンベリさんたちの拘束についてイスラエルに強く抗議する

　スウェーデンの環境活動家、グレタ・トゥーンベリさんが人権団体と協力して支援物資を届けるためパレスチナ自治区ガザ地区に向かっていた船が、6月9日イスラエル軍に拿捕されました。

　6月1日イタリアのシチリア島を出港した、グレタ・トゥーンベリさんらを乗せた船は、食料、乳児用ミルク、医薬品を積み、ガザ地区へ向けて地中海を進んでいました。しかし、ガザ地区周辺の海域はイスラエル軍が海上封鎖をしており、グレタさんらの乗った船を阻止するとしていました。

　ガザに向けて船を運航していた団体の声明では「不法に船に乗り込まれ、非武装の民間の乗船者が連れ去られた。粉ミルクや食料、医療品を含む救命用の貨物も押収された」としています。その上でイスラエル側の対応は国際法に違反すると非難しました。

　私たち日本ジャーナリスト会議（JCJ）は、戦前の日本のメディアが軍部と歩調を合わせ、戦争を鼓舞した反省から「二度と戦争のためにペン、カメラ、マイクを握らない」との決意のもと活動をスタートさせました。それは国内だけはなく、世界でも平和を脅かす戦争をなくしていこうという思いにつながります。

　グレタ・トゥーンベリさんは「このミッションがどれほど危険でも世界全体が沈黙するほうがはるかに危険だ」「どれだけ不利益であっても、私たちは行動し続けなければならない。行動をやめた瞬間、人間性を失うことになる」と訴えています。

　私たちは、この呼びかけに少しでも応えることができるよう声をあげます。イスラエル軍のグレタさんらの拘束に強く抗議し、支援物資をガザ地区へ届けるよう求めます。

　ガザ地区ではイスラエル軍の攻撃で今も犠牲者が相次いでいます。地元当局は6月9日、アメリカ主導の財団による食料の配給場所の周辺で、配給が始まってからの2週間で130人以上が死亡したと発表しています。イスラエルに対して一刻も早くガザ地区への攻撃を中止するよう重ねて求めます。

〈JCJ Statement〉We strong­ly protest the deten­tion of Gre­ta Thun­berg and oth­ers by Israel.

On June 9, the Israeli mil­i­tary seized a ship bound for the Gaza Strip, Pales­tine. Aboard was Swedish envi­ron­men­tal activist Gre­ta Thun­berg, who was col­lab­o­rat­ing with human rights groups to deliv­er human­i­tar­i­an aid.

The ship, car­ry­ing Ms. Thun­berg and oth­er activists, set sail from Sici­ly, Italy, on June 1. It was en route through the Mediter­ranean, loaded with essen­tial sup­plies such as food, infant for­mu­la, and med­i­cine for Gaza. The Israeli mil­i­tary, enforc­ing a naval block­ade around the Gaza Strip, had pre­vi­ous­ly declared it would stop any such ves­sels.

Accord­ing to a state­ment from the flotil­la orga­niz­ers, “Our ves­sel was unlaw­ful­ly board­ed, and its unarmed civil­ian pas­sen­gers were abduct­ed. The life-sav­ing car­go, includ­ing pow­dered milk, food, and med­ical sup­plies, was also seized.” The orga­ni­za­tion con­demned the Israeli response as a clear vio­la­tion of inter­na­tion­al law.

We at the Japan Con­gress of Jour­nal­ists (JCJ) were found­ed on the solemn promise to “nev­er again take up our pens, cam­eras, or micro­phones for war.” This pledge stems from our remorse over how Japan’s pre-war media fanned the flames of war in lock­step with the mil­i­tary. Our mis­sion is not con­fined to Japan; it is a glob­al com­mit­ment to end­ing wars that threat­en peace every­where.
Gre­ta Thun­berg pow­er­ful­ly stat­ed, “How­ev­er dan­ger­ous this mis­sion may be, the silence of the entire world is far more dan­ger­ous. We must keep act­ing, regard­less of the per­son­al cost. The moment we cease to act, we lose our human­i­ty.“

In response to her call, we raise our voic­es. We vehe­ment­ly protest the deten­tion of Ms. Thun­berg and the oth­er activists by the Israeli mil­i­tary and demand the imme­di­ate deliv­ery of all aid sup­plies to the peo­ple of Gaza.

Mean­while, Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip con­tin­ue to claim inno­cent lives. On June 9, local author­i­ties report­ed that over 130 peo­ple had been killed near a food dis­tri­b­u­tion cen­ter oper­at­ed by a U.S.-led foun­da­tion in just the past two weeks. We once again call on Israel to halt its mil­i­tary offen­sive in the Gaza Strip with­out delay.
